Cloud and his comrades escape the city of Midgar in pursuit of the fallen hero, Sephiroth. As they travel across the world, they find themselves on a journey that will decide the fate of the planet.

The mysterious invisible beings attack the Sector 7 slums the next morning and Jessie is hurt. Barret hires Cloud as her replacement, and the mission is back on track. Cloud, Barret, and Tifa head topside on the train, but fail an ID check under the updated security system and abandon the train mid-journey and trek their way to the reactor on foot. After setting up the remote-controlled bomb they try to leave, but discover that they are being broadcast to the public, live on the Shinra News.

Weapons, armors, accessories and summon materia will be available from launch and can be claimed from the Gift Box on the main menu.

Outside of battle, characters use different, blockier models. The player controls the party leader—normally Cloud, but Aeris, Tifa, Barret, and Cid are party leaders briefly in the story—and can traverse and interact with the environment. This can involve interacting with non-player characters to use their dialog boxes, which can involve purchasing items and equipment from shops or progressing the main story or sidequests.

Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith race back to the Sector 7 slums. The way takes them through the sewers and the train graveyard, which they find haunted by the captured spirits of children whom Aerith can still commune with. They free the childrens' spirits by felling the demon haunting the grounds and make their way to the Sector 7 slums where they find the pillar under attack by Shinra, with the locals up in arms to protect it. Shinra announces that Avalanche is about to drop the plate and that Shinra does not negotiate with terrorists and thus they need to give themselves up.

After Shinra soldiers make an appearance in Kalm, it's time for Cloud and the gang to make their exit, which leads me to the Grasslands; an open-zoned area that instantly imposes its sense of scale. We're no longer in the confines of Midgar, we're now out in the world at large.
